Summertime is a great time for doing science! In fact, you probably will have an entire science lab near you this summer. Your kitchen, your backyard, at the swimming pool or at the beach, all is a place to find some coolscience for hotdays!
Below are some fantastic sites where you can find some ideas for what to do in your summer science lab. Remember: some of these experiments require help from an adult. Be sure to ask someone to help and be careful!
This summer, remember the words of ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL, a great scientist:
"Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive into the woods. Every time you do so you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before. Follow it up, explore all around it, and before you know it, you will have something worth thinking about to occupy your mind.
All really big discoveries are the results of thought."
SUMMER OF SCIENCE!!
Silly Slime
Materials (Corn Starch, Water) Mix 1 cup of corn starch with 1 cup of water. Use your hands to mix it until it is a smooth texture. You can change the texture by adding a 2nd cup of corn starch. Add food color or paint to make the slime. Store in a covered container. It will keep for several days. Also, you could use boiling water to create slime with a different consistency. You might want to try making it both ways BUT have an adult help you with the hot water!!!
Pushy Putty or Flubber
Materials (Borax, white glue, water, 2 glass jars with lids, cup) Pour 4 cups of water into a large glass jar. Add 1/4 cup Borax and stir until it is dissolved. In the 2nd jar, mix 1 cup water and 1 cup white craft glue. Tighten the lid and shake well until mixed. If you want colored putty, add food coloring or paint to the water and glue mixture. To make the putty, pour 1 cup of the Borax solution in a cup, add 1/4 of the glue solution. Stir it with your finger. The glue mixture suddenly thickens as soon as it comes in contact with the Borax solution. In fact, you may need to make sure there are glue bubbles in the center of the putty. Remove the putty from the solution and knead it to get the finished texture. Pushy Putty can be used to make impressions from newspapers or color comics. Store in a sealed container or plastic bag.
Note: Borax can be found with laundry detergents in most grocery stores. It can be toxic if ingested. Please be sure to keep it out of reach of small children and immediately clean up any spills.
