DECEMBER/JANUARY UPDATE

K/3, K/4, and Kindergarten

The students have been learning about the beneficial bugs we want to attract to our gardens and the many positive things they do for our plants. They have also been perusing the seed catalogs and have found many different vegetables, fruits, and flowers. They used pictures from the catalogs and created their own garden plan as we eagerly await warmer temperatures so that they can begin to plant our spring garden.

1st Grade

The students have been studying animal behaviors during the winter. They have learned the difference between migration and hibernation and can name several different animals that use these particular instincts to survive in the winter months. They are now studying light, shadows, and color.

2nd Grade

The students finished up their study of liquids by observing the properties of toothpaste when it is mixed with water. During our "quick sand" lab, the students observed the unique properties of corn starch when it is suspended in water.

3rd Grade
As the water unit continues, the students have investigated surface tension and water on a slope. They have also collected several facts for their water portfolio about water usage. The students have built their own thermometers and explored the properties of hot and cold water. They have also experienced the value of blubber to arctic marine animals in icy water during the blubber lab.

4th Grade

During our study of light energy, the students have investigated color filters, the visible light spectrum and the electromagnetic spectrum. They are creating a light folder using what they are learning about light and color. The folders will be on display in the hallway outside of the lab.

5th Grade

The students are learning about several different forms of renewable energy and have divided into groups to create a display cube highlighting their research one of the 'green' energy sources. A "Renewable Energy Museum" using these cubes will be on display in the lower school library.

NOVEMBER UPDATE

K/3, K/4, and Kindergarten

The students have been studying how gardeners compost to enrich their garden soils. Then they had a sweet potato feast using the sweet potatoes they grew in the Lakeview Learning Garden. They peeled the sweet potatoes and then enjoyed sweet potato pie and freshly made sweet potato chips compliments of Mrs. Myers.

1st Grade

The students have been exploring rocks and minerals and the various ways they are used in our world. To culminate this unit of study, the students have created a "Rock Museum" that is now on display in the library. Each student has written a short report on rock of their choice and has drawn some incredible illustrations to accompany the report.

2nd Grade

The students have begun their study of the properties of liquids by sorting 7 "mystery" liquids according to transparency, color, and viscosity. They have also observed the different properties of a liquid using the "water level in a bottle" lab and the "falling water" lab.

3rd Grade

The students began their study of water by building a water portfolio to store all of their lab sheets and charts for the unit. They have examined the amount of salt water vs. fresh water on our planet and they have begun to look at the properties of water as it drops onto different surfaces.

4th Grade

The students finished up the sound unit by making bee hummers and sound sandwiches. They will now begin their study of light as an energy source.

5th Grade

The students have finished up their study of electricity and magnetism by building electromagnets and exploring the variables that strengthen an electromagnet. They are now creating a "learning" station about magnets or electricity and they will use it to teach the kindergarten classes.

OCTOBER UPDATE

K/3, K/4, and Kindergarten

The students have been busy in the Lakeview Learning Garden finishing up the summer vegetable harvest. They have picked lots of tomatoes and dug up quite a crop of sweet potatoes. After the harvest, they've begun to plant the cool weather vegetables like kale, lettuce, cabbage, and swiss chard. Mr. Anthony even shared some the onion starts from his home garden and the students transplanted those to the school garden.

1st Grade

The students have begun a study of Rocks this by sorting and classifying rocks and discussing their different attributes. They have been exploring rocks and minerals and the various ways they are used in our world. Using their Science Spin magazines, they studied germs and ways to keep themselves healthy and germ-free.

2nd Grade

The students have finished up the 1st part of the study of solids in the "States of Matter" unit by constructing tall towers using solid objects. They will continue this unit by looking at the different properties of solids and using screens to sort small solids by size. The students extended their knowledge of solids with an exploration of polymers. They observed quick absorbing string-like polymers (worm goo) and the gradual absorption of the "hand" and the "brain" just in time for Halloween.

3rd Grade

The students finished their study of Georgia's natural resources by completing a research project on Georgia's state symbols. Be sure to come by the science lab hallway to see their completed projects. They look fabulous! After a quick study of bats and skeletons for Halloween, they will be studying the various ways that energy is transferred in food webs within different ecosystems.

4th Grade

The students are studying how sound travels through solids and liquids by using stethoscopes and megaphones. They also investigated how animals communicate using sound with a special emphasis on bats and their use of echolocation.

5th Grade

The students have begun their study of electricity by building circuits to light a bulb and to make a motor run. They have learned about two important pioneers in electromagnetic science: Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison. Then using their circuit boards, they found insulators and conductors in the lab and even took a walk around the school in search of more conductors. They have also been building series and parallel circuits and using schematics to 'draw' what they have built.

SEPTEMBER UPDATE

K/3, K/4, and Kindergarten

Students are learning about the basic needs of all plants as they are helping to water, weed, and harvest the tomatoes, zucchini, basil and peppers. They even found and removed a giant tobacco horn worm that was devouring the tomato plants which led to a great lesson on beneficial insects and non-beneficial garden insects.

1st Grade

We began the year by harvesting the pumpkins that were grown from seed last spring by this year's 1st graders. The students were very excited as we counted 15 pumpkins! Students are now pondering "What is a scientist?" by exploring various scientific careers. They have also been introduced to the many science tools and safety equipment we use in science with a hands-on lab.

2nd Grade

Students learned the steps to the Scientific Method and have been 'introduced' to the 2nd grade tree. They discussed all of the ways that trees are used in our daily lives and they spent some time beneath the branches of the 2nd grade tree to do a leaf rubbing.

3rd Grade

We reviewed the Scientific Method and used the steps to do a "Milk Rainbow" lab and a "Gummy Bear" lab. They are now beginning their study of living things in ecosystems with an emphasis on Georgia's natural resources.

4th Grade

Students used the steps of the Scientific Method and their inquiry skills to complete the "Save Fred" lab, "Gobstopper" lab and the "Dental Floss" lab. They are now beginning their study of Sound Energy. They have used sound discrimination during the Drop Chamber lab and have even developed sound codes to communicate with their classmates.

5th Grade

After a quick review of the Scientific Method, the students worked in engineering teams to design and build the highest tower possible for a marshmallow using a limited supply of spaghetti noodles, tape, and string. They then began their study of magnetism and electricity. They predicted, sorted, and tested objects based upon their magnetism and have used their knowledge to create "talking" magnets.
